Interesting perspective, there really are some good points that is worth looking into this post. For some, PPC would be the last thing to look into, believing that PPC is costly and the conversion rates doesn't equate to the ROI. It does really make sense that using PPC first before seo is beneficial.

keyword spy is a great tool and I have used it often but my advice is to take the ROI figures with a pinch of salt, they certainy serve as guide bot nothing more. Check your own adwords account against whay keywordspy thinks are your best ROI keywords and you will see what I mean.

I recently did some research to find out exactly how low search volume these keywords have, and found 'low search volume' keywords with up to 573 monthly searches http://www.alanmitchell.com.au/techniques/how-low-is-low-search-volume/

Hardly low search volume.

I agree with Eloi - automatically deactivating low search keywords is a poor move by Google, as it prevents small businesses, who can't compete with bug businesses on highly generic keywords, reach small niches through long-tail keyword targeting. Can only hurt Google's profitability in the long term.

So I have a bunch of negative keywords and filter my analytics account to see exactly what people are searching for when they access my site. If all of my negative keywords are single word broad match does your post infer that if a search contains a word on my negative keyword list it will not display at all ever or that on the rare occasion it will?
