What is the Adwords Pay Per Click Illusion?

February 3, 2009

We were enticed into world of “the machine”, the lure of only paying for clicks, right?

Behind the curtain, the truth of Adwords is:

  • we are really paying for impressions
  • adwords won’t show our ads for free, for long
  • if we don’t make Adwords money, why show our ads?

So, my friends, sorry to burst your bubble…

Although Adwords is “pay per click”, the real math behind the curtains is pay per 1,000 impressions.

If you are succeeding w/ Adwords, and not tracking goals/conversions…

“you are succeeding inspite of yourself”

The true metrics of adwords should be profit per 1,000 impressions… but that’s getting ahead of myself, as I don’t really understand it fully myself. I’ll need to read more about this from www.askhowie.com and @glennlivingston who I heard about this.

It's funny how many advertisers still think otherwise. Over the past two to three years I've been noticing more PPC specialists still subscribing to the old rules and unwilling to listen to reason and testing.
